Twice now, the Boerne Star has printed a press release on the governor’s push for “school choice” (once in the March 22 issue, and again on March 29), with absolutely no information on opposition to such programs.

Both sets of my grandparents were married in September of 1923. One hundred years ago this year! It was the “Roaring Twenties”. In August of 1923, President Harding died in office and President Coolidge was sworn in as America’s 30th president.

Dear Editor, On Monday, March 20th, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued its latest assessment on climate change, drawing on the findings of hundreds of scientists throughout the world. The assessment details the devastating impacts of rising greenhouse gas emissions, including destruction of homes, loss of crops, and fragmentation of communities.

Gov. Greg Abbott, in a State of the State address last Thursday, outlined his seven top priorities for the ongoing legislative session before an invitation-only audience at a manufacturing facility in San Marcos, the Austin American-Statesman reported. Those priorities include $4 billion for border security, property tax relief and more school choice for parents, which he called “education freedom.” He avoided use of the word “vouchers.’

During the Christmas season, I was in conversations where the topic of Jesus and politics came up. At first, it was an uncomfortable place, and my initial reaction was, really? Can’t we enjoy the season without involving politics? However, the idea, the concept of Jesus related to politics, or vice versa, intrigued me enough to consider if there was a deeper and perhaps indeed a contemporary meaning, because ultimately, it seems to me, the deepest issues facing humanity are spiritual in nature and will require spiritual solutions.

I grew in New Braunfels and my grandparents lived down the street. My grandfather, Lt. Col Robert J. Uhr, served his country and his party. He was a huge influence in my political shaping. He would take me to campaign rallies and to the voting booths where I sat quietly while he cast his vote. It made a lasting impression on me. He always told me voting wasn’t just about election day, it was about what goes on before and after that, and he encouraged me to understand the process.

For my penultimate column to describe the important statewide races on the November 8 ballot and the Democratic vision for that office, I’ll review the position of Lieutenant Governor (Lt. Gov.).
