LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Don’t use my tax money to pay for your private school

Editor: This week the Boerne Independent School District held its board meeting. Of interest to me was our legislative update with regard to school vouchers.

Rich Sena gave the presentation. He led a delegation from Boerne to Austin to lobby our representatives on behalf of the district. Through all their efforts, my takeaway from the presentation is that vouchers are a foregone conclusion, i.e., the voucher issue is going to pass no matter how the people or local school districts feel about them.

So rather than keep opposing the issue, we are taking the stance “to go along to get along.” Rich has always been a numbers guy and I feel he does his best to look after BISD.

Rich has noticed that in current legislation, BISD will be at a competitive disadvantage with teacher salaries compared to neighboring school districts. He has written an amendment which State Rep. Ellen Troxclair is supposed to offer once the legislation is debated. Texas does not fully fund public education in Texas; we rank 43rd in the nation and yet we expect firstclass schools.

Now our governor is holding voters hostage while using a teacher raise in scamming elected officials to support his political scheme. This is a short-sighted goal that will further decrease our already underfunded school finances.

BISD should not be duped. We should stand against vouchers and continue to invest public tax dollars for public schools. In Boerne, Geneva’s tuition ranges from $14,000 to $18,000 for the school year depending on a child’s school level. The parents currently sending their children to this private school will receive $8,000 from the state, which will reduce their bill.

My question is, how many parents in the Boerne school district will be able to take advantage of this voucher at its current level? These monies are our tax dollars. I don’t want my taxes to pay for someone to attend a private school. - Richard Caldwell Boerne resident
