For the first time in its history, the Boerne High football team will get to host a playoff game at its home field, and for the first time this year, the Greyhounds (7-3) will play back-to-back games at home.
All of that will take place Thursday when the Greyhounds host Corpus Christi Carroll at BISD Stadium, 7 p.m.
As far as anybody knows, Boerne has never hosted a home playoff game in its 100-year history, and a look at this year’s schedule shows the Greyhounds have alternated between road and home games all year.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said it’s nice to be home for two in a row, especially since this week’s game is a playoff contest. He added that hosting a postseason contest is something they’ve talked about once district started.
“It’s a big accomplishment for our team, we’ve emphasized playing a game at home and started talking about it before the Alamo Heights game,” he said. “It’s fun to not have to travel, we get to play at home.”
Carroll (5-5 overall, 3-2 in district) finished third in the district with a win last Friday against Moody, 35-21, and will make the drive to Boerne on Thursday.
Hendrix said they can’t afford to take the Tigers lightly.
“They have a couple of explosive players offensively,” he said. “They run the ball well and have a couple of good wide receivers, who have gotten behind people all year long.”
Hendrix said Carroll’s starting quarterback Nick Cantu is very good.
“He’s been hurt but when he’s healthy they’re real good,” the coach said. “It’ll be a good match up; we’ll have our work cut out for us.”
The Tigers’ big win this year came against 4A traditional power Calallen, 27-21.
After 10 games, Hendrix said he likes where his team is. He wasn’t sure what their record would be at this point but is pleased with how they’ve close out district play by scoring 49, 50, 49, 50 and 49 points after the Alamo Heights loss, something that still bothers the coach.
“I wasn’t sure what our record would be, but we had a good chance to win the district championship, that was our goal,” he said. “I’m still disappointed in that loss, we felt we played well enough to win, but it shaped and helped our team and I feel good about how we’re practicing and how we’re playing.”
Hendrix said at this point they’re going to tweak a few minor things on both sides of the ball going forward but aren’t going to reinvent the wheel.
“We want to improve on tackling, we don’t want to tackle a ton in practice, but tackling is still at a premium on defense, it’s always a big thing,” he said. “We always prepare for different scenarios that we may face, like 3-man fronts or 4-man fronts.”
It’s the same thing on the offensive side of the ball. Hendrix said they do add a few wrinkles into the playbook every week and might throw out a trick play like they did last week when they had a wide receiver throw a pass that was successful.
“We do add three to five things each week and have a bank of things and we may go to those,” he said. “(As far as the wide receiver pass) we’ve been working on that for about three weeks. We have a menu of trick plays and we work on those things and it worked last week, it was awesome.”
After taking a handoff, BHS wide receiver Brooks Perez completed his pass for 16 yards that helped to give Boerne a first down, while Hank Hendrix completed 17 of 24 passes for 268 yards and 3 TDs and Jaxon Baize tossed 2 passes and completed 1 of them. Adam Hicks paced the ground game with 116 yards on 12 carries with one TD, while Ivan Perez and Jeff Morrison also added a running touchdown.
Ten different players caught a pass and were led by Brooks Perez who hauled in 7 passes for 136 yards that included a touchdown on a spectacular over-the-shoulder grab. Zach Freasier and Hutson Hendrix also hauled in touchdown passes.
Hutson Hendrix finished with 13 tackles, Ty Bush added 11 tackles and Ryan Hooper came up with 10 stops, while the defensive highlight was Townes Oviedo returning an interception 45 yards for a score.
