Comfort girls drop hoops season opener, Bobcats tip off their

2024 Friday at home

A short-handed Comfort girls basketball team opened its season last week on the road and was defeated by Nueces Canyon, 65-15.

The Deer start the year at 0-1 and visited Johnson City Tuesday. They’ll also be on the road Saturday at Harper.

Nueces Canyon took control early in last week’s game and was leading 20-4 and then outscored the Deer in the second period, 9-5, for the 29-9 halftime lead.

The Lady Panthers picked up the pace once the second half started and had their best scoring quarter of the game in the third with 21 points, while the Deer tallied 4 points to make it 50-13.

The Panthers also won the fourth quarter, 15-2, to make it a sweep of all four stanzas.

Alexa Lozano finished with 5 points to pace the Deer, while Savannah Pizana and Danielle Ruelas both netted 4 and Molly Gowan scored 2.

Gowan grabbed 11 rebounds and 4 steals, while Anahi Martinez snagged 6 boards and dished out 2 assists.

With Comfort’s defeat in the second round of the volleyball playoffs, the Deer are expected to get a few more players added to their roster, including their starting point guard and best scoring threat.

Bobcats

Now that football is over for Comfort, they will begin their basketball season this week.

The Bobcats are scheduled to open their 2024 season at home against Cole on Friday. Cole is where Shaquille O’Neal graduated from back in the day.

After playing Cole, the Cats are on the road against Knippa for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
