The Geneva School of Boerne closes out the regular season Friday with a long drive to Corpus Christi to take on John Paul II.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. An Eagles win Friday guarantees Geneva a home playoff game in the first round, something head coach Grant Gaston said the team is aware of.
Geneva is coming off its bye week last Friday. Before that, the Eagles hosted a struggling San Antonio Compass Rose Legacy team and won 54-0 in a game played Oct. 25.
In their game against Compass Rose, Gaston gave most of his starters and the upperclassmen the night off, which means some of the regular starters haven’t played a game since Oct. 18, when they tangled with Austin Hill Country Christian.
Gaston said their bye week came really late but added that they are trying to use it to their advantage as they’ve let players heal up the last few weeks.
“In the end, the late bye turns out to be helpful because it does allow our team to heal up and rest prior to the playoffs,” he said. “But we need to make sure we’re not rusty as we return to play.”
After playing nine straight games, including two scrimmages before that, Gaston said they were ready for some downtime, but added that they were still working.
“The break was much needed for our team since our bye week came so late in the season,” he said. “We practiced and lifted as usual on Monday through Thursday and then took Friday off.”
The Centurions are struggling and are winless this year. They stand at 0-9 overall and 0-4 in district. CC JP II hasn’t scored in their four district games and has been shutout six times this year.
Gaston said they can’t overlook anybody at this time of year, especially since they have a home playoff game on the line.
“John Paul II is very multiple on offense, so they present a lot of different looks you have to prepare for,” the coach said.
Geneva is 2-2 in district and 5-4 overall. Their game with Compass Rose was a non-district game they picked up after a district opponent dropped out of the league.
As far as the district standings heading into Friday, Holy Cross is in first at 4-0, New Braunfels Christian 3-1, followed by Geneva at 2-2, while Hill Country Christian is also 2-2, but lost to Geneva to put them in fourth place.
Schertz John Paul II is 1-3, followed by Corpus Christi John Paul II at 0-4.
The top five teams will make the playoffs.
