Comfort High sent both its boys and girls cross country teams to this year’s Region I-3A meet in Lubbock and at least one Deer punched her ticket to state, while a Bobcat just missed out on a return trip to state.
Ella Thiele qualified for state by placing seventh overall with a PR time of 12:31.90 over the twomile course.
Thiele is the 12th Deer athlete to run in the 12-minute range (something she has done four times this season and now owns the 8th fastest time in school history.)
The junior is the first Comfort racer to qualify for state in back-to-back years since Crystal Agredano did it during the 2019-20 seasons.
In the 3A boys race, Hunter Lackey came one spot short of returning to state for a second straight season. They take the top 10 individuals who are not on the four qualifying teams and Lackey was 11th in that scenario.
The 3A state meet is Saturday, Nov. 2, in Round Rock at Old Settlers Park. Thiele will race at 9:30 a.m. that morning.
Varsity Girls
Comfort finished 21st in the team standings and was paced by Thiele, who had the third-best time of those not on an advancing team.
Also for Comfort, Harper Cole ran a 14:36.5 for 75th, Lexie Womble placed 100th with a 15:05.9, Olivia Sanchez completed the course in a time of 15:52.4 for 129th, Jael Hernandez came in 141 with a 16:45.9 and Juana Leon posted a 16:47.9 for 144, while Jordan Judkins wasn’t able to finish the race after she rolled an ankle.
If Judkins had completed the course, the Deer would have moved up quite a bit in the standings since she runs in the 14:00s and their fifth-place scorer was in the 16:00s.
Holliday (31) won the race, Dalhart (96) took second, Wall (169) came in third and Canadian (179) was fourth to all qualify.
Varsity Boys
Holliday (70) won the event on the boys side, Eastland ( 146) came in second, Tuscola Jim Ned (150) finished third and Lubbock Roosevelt (159) rounded out the state-qualifying field.
Comfort finished 16th in the team standings with 405 points.
Lackey posted a 17:35.6 for 22nd overall, Jackson Dear placed 29th in 17:53.4 and also just missed out on an individual spot at state, Ruben Breceda came in 70th with a time of 19:01.3, Preston Tomlin turned in a 22:35.2 for 139th and Luke Reich rounded out the team with a 22:57.5 for 145th place.
