Boerne Champion is sitting in a tough spot in the District 13-5A DI standings through three league games.
The Chargers are 0-3 in district and have a lot of work to do in their final four games if they’re going to make the playoffs.
Champion likely has to win its four remaining games, including beating district heavyweights Pieper and Wagner, but Chargers coach Blane Ellis said they’ll worry about those teams later.
For this week, Champion is fixated on Friday’s opponent – MacArthur.
“We’re taking it one day at a time, focus on what’s in front of us,” he said. “We have to continue to get better and continue to fight and play with an attitude of belief.”
Friday’s game at BISD Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
The Chargers are 3-3 overall, while the Brahmas are 1-5 overall and 0-3 in district.
Mac’s only win came in its opener to LEE, 26-2. They played Holmes tough the following week but lost in a shootout, 49-42. The rest of their games have been pretty lopsided against them.
Champion is also 0-3 in district but could easily be 2-1. In losses to Seguin and New Braunfels, the Chargers were leading at halftime.
Against Seguin, they tallied 52 points by the break and were up 52-37. Last week at New Braunfels they were leading the Unicorns at halftime, 28-21.
Ellis said they are right there, but just need to finish games stronger in the second half. “We’re real close, we’ve got to get the ball to bounce our way,” he said.
One thing the Unicorns did well last Friday was run the ball to burn clock and then punch it in after long, sustained drives.
New Braunfels had the ball four times in the second half and scored TDs on all four possessions.
Champion only had the ball for five plays in the third quarter as the Unicorns’ game plan limited their possessions and kept the Chargers offense off the field.
The Chargers only scored once in the second half on a touchdown pass to Brogan Dempsey, who had quite a game and tallied three receiving touchdowns in the game.
Ellis said it was tough not being able to get the Unicorns offense off the field.
“It was frustrating and we’re trying to address that. We haven’t been able to throw the knockout punch in the second half,” he said. “(New Braunfels) came out and said, ‘we’re going to run the ball’ and we really didn’t adjust, but the kids have fought hard in every single game.”
Mac runs the Wing-T and has been shutout in two district games, while being held to 3 points in the other contest.
Even though the Brahmas are struggling, Ellis said they can’t take anything for granted at 0-3 in district.
“We have to get the proper angles and win the battle up front,” he said. “We have to get after these guys and get them out of the game and we’re capable of doing that. We have to be more physical on both sides of the ball.”
