The Boerne High football team will have its longest road trip of the season so far when the Greyhounds travel to Victoria for a district game.

Like Boerne, Victoria is a two-high school town and the Greyhounds will play Victoria West. (Their other high school, Victoria East, is in Boerne Champion’s district.)

BHS tangles with the West Warriors Friday at 7 p.m. Victoria West is having a good year and stands at 6-1 overall.

The Warriors are 2-1 in district and have defeated Kerrville Tivy (45-26) and lost to Alamo Heights (56-28), while the Greyhounds are 1-1 with a loss to Alamo Heights (35-28) and a win over Harlandale (49-21) last week.

Boerne coach Che Hendrix said that when his team faces an opponent they aren’t familiar with or haven’t played, they have to do a little more prep work.

“We’ve got to dig deeper and go back further through previous films to see their evolution as a team,” he said. “When you’ve played somebody in the past, you know who they are and what they’re trying to do.”

One thing Hendrix said he and his staff have found is that the Warriors can score.

Victoria West’s lowest- scoring output was last week against Alamo Heights with 28 points. They’ve tallied 45, 54, 46, 41, 41 and 30 for an average of 42 points in their six wins.

“They score a lot of points, they’re good offensively – they have a good receiver and running back, and their quarterback is a good decision-making quarterback,” Hendrix said. “They like to play fast and with a lot of tempo and they’re solid defensively.”

While Victoria West can score, the Greyhounds can light up a scoreboard as well. Boerne is coming off a 49-21 win over Harlandale. BHS was up 28-0 at halftime and then both teams scored 21 points in the second half.

Hendrix was moving a lot of players in and out in the second half so everybody saw some action.

“We played well in all three phases of the game,” he said.

Boerne tallied more than 600 yards from scrimmage with 460 through the air and another 156 on the ground.

Hank Hendrix tossed four TD passes, with two going to Matthew Garrison and two to Zach Freasier.

Ivan Perez ran for one touchdown and Jeff Morrison tallied two rushing scores, while Diego Jimenez was good on all seven extra points as the Hounds scored in every quarter.

Brooks Perez didn’t score but he tallied 103 receiving yards, Garrison had 102 receiving yards and Freasier recorded 94 receiving yards, while Morrison led the ground game with 71 yards.

Defensively, Braden Bays, Ty Bush, Hutson Hendrix and Ryan Hooper all finished with 8 tackles, while Jake Perez had an interception.

Perez had another pick but it was wiped off the board by a penalty. The game was bogged down by penalty calls in the second half and most seemed to be on the Greyhounds. One drive alone saw six flags thrown on both teams combined, with three of those coming in a row.

“It is what it is, it was one of those games where stuff seemed to go against us,” Hendrix said. “We’ve got to constantly try to fight through that.”
