Officials have identified a man who drowned Saturday in Boerne City Lake.

Chris Shadrock, Boerne director of communications, said Jorge Zavala, 40, of the Leon Springs area, spent Saturday afternoon and evening fishing at the lake, complained of being hot and entered the water to cool down.

Evidently unaware of the underwater elevation change, Shadrock said the man reached an area of deep water, went under the surface, and began shouting for help.

Guests with Zavala were unable to swim and called 911 for help, with calls received by dispatchers at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

Alcohol was not a factor in the drowning, Shadrock added.

The Boerne Fire Department water rescue team responded Saturday night and began their search. Texas Park and Wildlife game wardens joined the search early Sunday morning, bringing sonar technology which helped locate Zavala's body in about 8-10 feet of water.

Boerne City Lake — with posted hours of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week — was closed during the search and recovery but reopened Sunday afternoon.
