Geneva’s bid for a state champion in girls soccer came up one victory short after the Eagles were defeated by McKinney Christian Academy in the TAPPS D-III state finals.
The Mustangs won Wednesday’s championship match in Round Rock, 3-1, and the Eagles returned to Boerne with silver medals.
Geneva advanced to the finals with a 3-0 win over Schertz John Paul II Tuesday and played McKinney Christian Academy Wednesday.
The Mustangs scored in the first half on an Eva Thompson goal in the 22nd minute in Wednesday’s championship tilt and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
It stayed that way until late in the match when McKinney Christian sealed the win with a couple of late goals — both by Thompson.
With less than 15 minutes left, Thompson angled one in from the right side from about 30 yards out to make it 2-0.
Three minutes later, Thompson completed the hat trick and kicked one from straight ahead that slipped away from the Geneva keeper to make it 3-0.
To Geneva’s credit, the Eagles played until the final whistle. Alexandra Duran knocked in a goal with 19 seconds left to erase the shutout and put Geneva on the board.
Duran, Hayle Heinen, Kathleen Friesenhahn and Emrey Taylor were selected to the all-tournament team.
