Boerne takes district win streak to 45 but mum is the word

With Tuesday’s 89-41 win over Navarro, the Boerne High boys basketball team took its district win streak to 45 straight.

It is believed to be the longest win streak by any BISD boys team in history and surpasses one the Greyhounds set a few years ago when they won 44 in a row.

Both streaks have come under current Greyhounds coach Kimble McHone, who said he’s not brought it to their attention — at all.

“I haven’t said a word about it,” McHone said. “I should probably tell them but it might jinx it.”

Part of the reason McHone hasn’t said anything is because they have bigger fish to fry, like getting to the state semifinals as they’ve done the last three seasons.

“We just try to go 1-0 every game, we focus on that opponent,” McHone said. “All our focus goes on that one team, it’s just about daily stuff.”

One of the most impressive aspects about the consecutive wins is that the 44 and 45 game streaks have both come over a span of five seasons, which means that a lot of different players have had a role in it.

“It talks about the program and the kids that we’ve had come through here. We haven’t done it with one group of kids, it has been several groups of kids,” McHone said. “It’s two really long streaks and it shows how dominant we’ve been. One class picks it up and leaves and the next class picks it up. It’s cool how everybody has had something to do with it.”

The 44-game streak started in 2009-10 and lasted until the 2013-14 school year. The current one began during the 2019-20 season and if they win their final four district games this year it’ll take the streak to 49.

If they do make it to 49, McHone said they’ll probably talk about it.

“It’ll be fun if we get to 49 and then we can talk about it,” he said. “When it’s all over with, we’ll go back and add them all up and figure it out and celebrate them.”
