Kerrville Tivy has a saying that “Tivy Fight Never Dies,” and while it did die Friday night in Boerne against the Champion boys, it was a slow death.
The Chargers were leading by 15 points with four minutes left but the Antlers managed to make a game of it. Kerrville cut the lead to two points by the end before Champion prevailed at Charger Gym, 61-59.
Champion improved to 25-4 overall and 8-1 in district. The Chargers were at Pieper Tuesday and host Smithson Valley Friday.
Champion was up 45-33 at the end of the third and then built a 15-point lead by the middle of the fourth quarter but that’s when the comeback started.
It seemed that everything Tivy tossed up went in. The Antlers finished with 26 in the final quarter after only scoring 33 points through the first three periods. Included in those 26 points were five 3-pointers, four 2-pointers and a 3 for 4 performance at the free-throw line.
The Chargers struggled with turnovers in the final stanza but did well at the free-throw line to keep the Antlers at bay as they never gave up the lead despite Tivy’s push.
Champion went 10 for 14 at the line in the fourth and also had 3-pointers from Baeden Burdick and Charlie Georgelos.
The Chargers were up 59-54 after a pair of Mason Wyatt free throws with less than a minute left but Tivy scored a 2-pointer and it was 59-56 with 26.5 seconds remaining.
After going for a steal and not getting it, the Antlers fouled Georgelos, who made both free throws and the lead was 61-56 but Tivy hit a 3 with just one second on the clock and the was trimmed to two points at 61-59.
Champion inbounded and Briggs Jones was fouled with 0.3 on the clock and missed on the first free throw.
Jones then intentionally missed the second foul shot and tried to bounce the ball off the rim to start the clock but missed the rim so the clock never started.
It was Tivy’s ball under the Chargers basket and Kerrville tried a full-court pass but it missed everybody, going out of bounds on the other end.
Since the ball wasn’t touched, Champion regained possession under their own basket. The Chargers inbounded and killed the final 0.3 off the clock to wrap up the win.
Georgelos finished with 24 points, 9 of them coming in the fourth after he went 6 for 8 at the line and hit a 3.
Jones was also in double digits with 11 points, Wyatt also had 11 and hit three 3s and made both of his free throws in the fourth.
Quinn Grable hit a 3 in the first and finished with 3, Burdick scored 10 and drained a couple of 3s in the second half and Kristian Herrera made two free throws for two points.
