Boerne’s Hill County Mile was decked out in its finest holiday décor for Dickens On Main, the first weekend of the city’s holiday season.
Friday’s weather turned out perfect for the huge crowds of multigenerational families and friends who wandered through Main Street’s Hallmark movie-like setting. Even though Saturday was rainy, that didn’t deter the residents of and visitors to Boerne from enjoying the sights, sounds and activities of Christmas.
Families and friends will share memories of this very popular 23rd annual Dickens on Main in Boerne. One of the most popular activities during the weekend was the ice-skating rink set up on the Waterworks Terrace across from Main Plaza.
One young San Antonio mom, surrounded by shopping bags, said brought her daughter specifically to enjoy the skating. Other not-so-experienced skaters hugged the outside railing to keep from falling, even with parents and grandparents proudly taking photos.
Bryan Benway, with his wife and daughter, was enjoying the antics on the ice and expressed, “this adds to the Boerne experience.”
Food trucks surrounded the Main Plaza market where vendors shared their wares and crowds listened to the Boerne Village Band, enjoying the holiday singalong classics. The finale of both evenings was carver Burr Rasmussen from San Antonio creating works of art from blocks of ice with a chainsaw.
The Tiny Tim Village hosted hundreds of children taking part in activities, riding the trackless train, and shopping in a colorful array of gifts and toys.
The line for a photo with Santa was long but well worth the wait as the young and old marked the occasion by smiling for the camera. Frosty and the Grinch were also on hand to share a memorial moment.
In keeping with the poetic Christmas carol lyric, “Now Dasher, Now Dancer, Now Prancer and Vixen” – now, Jessica and Charles have made the trip from San Antonio for Dickens On Main an annual event.
Now, Kathleen and Rob of Bastrop were camping at the Guadalupe River State Park and decided to meet San Antonio friends Teresa and Steven, who convinced them that Dickens on Main was not an event to miss.
And now, Betty and Shirley came to town expressly to shop the boutiques on Main Street while their husbands enjoyed a brew nearby.
In the Dickens Village revelers heard a presentation from a representative of Last Chance Forever Birds of Prey, enjoyed Christmas story-telling, and took in a return of Bah Humbug, the one-man show.
The Christmas Shoppe, as expected, attracted many shoppers and lots of oohing and aahing over the beautiful decorations.
And of course, all restaurants and breweries were open and extended sidewalk pop-ups to serve snacks and drinks.
