o e n d . l Champion’s best baseball season in school history ended with 14 players being named to the 26-5A All-District team.
Senior Rowdy Miller received a superlative award and was recognized as one of the Pitchers of the Year, while junior Cameron Logan was a unanimous first-team outfielder and junior Jordan Ballin was a first-team shortstop.
Senior Ethan Harris and junior Evan Kuhl were both second-team outfielders, sophomore Jackson Melanson was a second-team pitcher and senior Jared Wingo was the second-team designated hitter.
Seven other Chargers received honorable mention recognition after freshman Garland Whitehead, sophomore Sam Miller, sophomore Grant Kinzel, junior Quinn Grable, senior Nic Cortez, sophomore Jacob Schwope and sophomore Aidan Smith all landed on the HM team.
Champion only finished third in district play after winning a third-place tiebreaker game against Kerrville Tivy but started to peak at the right time. They won seven straight games and swept opponents through the first three rounds of the playoffs.
After that, the Chargers dropped its first game in a best-of-three series against Corpus Christi Ray and Leander Rouse but rallied to win the next two to advance in the playoffs.
Champion’s win over Rouse in Game 3 was for the Region IV-5A title and propelled the Chargers to their first-ever state tournament appearance.
In Round Rock at Dell Diamond Stadium, Champion fell to Argyle in the state semifinals, 5-2, to close out their season with state bronze medals. The Chargers played 46 games this year and finished with a record of 33-12-1 in Ben Woodchick’s second year as coach.
