THE BOOKWORM
Star-studded summer!
Our Summer Learning Program is officially kicking off on Monday, June 5! The title this year is “A Reading Star is Born,” and all our programs are Hollywood themed. We offer events and activities for all ages, so even if you have seen many summers in your life, you can still participate! All the programs are free of charge and open to the public. Summer activities last until June 27. You don’t have to have a library card to take part in the fun, but we would love to have you join our library family.
Youth programming
On Monday, June 5 at 10:30 a.m., families can enjoy the Astonishing Mr. Pitts in our Community Room. Mr. Pitts and his puppet doggie Frank will give the audience a glimpse of Hollywood through wild antics, magic and much more! Each Tuesday at noon during the summer, Miss Constance meets with youngsters in Grades 4 and 5 in her Tween Graphic Novel Book Club. Space is limited to 15 students, so register now by emailing [email protected]. Each participant will get a free copy of “New Kid” by Jerry Croft. On Wednesdays we will continue offering our two weekly storytimes for little ones. The babies can come at 9:30 a.m. and the preschoolers are invited to the 10:30 a.m. storytime. On Thursdays we continue with Book Babies for ages 0 to 2 at 9:30 a.m. On Fridays of each week, Miss Constance invites children to whip up scrumptious nibbles. Space is limited, so first come, first served.
Teen programs
We are excited to offer a special program for teens (and even adults), on Saturday, June 10 at 3 p.m. in the Community Room. BHS grad Trevor Hensley will be beamed to us via Zoom to talk about his life-changing move from Boerne to Hollywood. He’s worked on multiple special effects for both movies and TV. Besides getting a glimpse of his work, audience members will have a chance to chat with Trevor about his work. Please reach out to Alex at [email protected] or Caren at [email protected] for more information. Each Wednesday at 2 p.m., we invite teens to join us for movies and popcorn during our Midweek Matinee program. Collect a pin for each movie you attend. The teen with the most pins at the end of the summer wins a prize!
Adult programs
Six of our discussion groups feature Hollywood-themed meetings. On Wednesday, June 7 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room, participants will get the opportunity to watch a screening of the classic James Stewart movie, “Vertigo.” You can then find out more about the movie’s director on Thursday, June 8 at 3 p.m. Dan Auiler, the author of “Vertigo: The Making of a Hitchcock Classic.” Email Caren at creech@boernelibrary. org for the Zoom registration link. Adults can enjoy a variety of programs in the following weeks, so please go to our website to view our online calendar, or you can access the summer’s brochure right from the main page at boernelibrary.org.
Live! at the library
This month’s concert at the Amphitheater behind the library is actually part of the Hollywood- themed summer, but it’s also a wonderful event for everyone who enjoys our outdoor performances. The Tina Wilkins Duo will include some movie-themed numbers during the concert, and we’ll offer a fun trivia contest during the intermission. The program is a family-friendly event and absolutely free! Be sure to bring your chairs or blankets, and of course, bring a picnic supper!
Bookshop Under the Windmill
Our amazing bookstore next to the library is open all summer long, Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop, filled with gently used items, is wonderfully inviting, and it is chock-full of like-new books as well as DVDs, children’s items, and more! We encourage you to shop for great deals. The bookshop is operated by the Friends of the Boerne Public Library, and proceeds go toward library services and resources.
