SAN ANTONIO - The third time proved to be the charm for the Champion baseball team after they were playing in their third regional championship round in school history. The Chargers had been 0-2 in this round with losses in 2012 and 2016 but they came through Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium after they defeated Leander Rouse in the winner-take-all third game, 9-4.

Champion heads to the 5A state tournament and will play Thursday in Round Rock in the state semifinals. Sophomore Grant Kinzel came through with the hit of the game after he smacked a bases-clearing double in the fifth to help the Chargers score 3 runs and take a 6-4 lead. Champion added three more insurance runs in the sixth and opened up a 9-4 advantage they held unitl the end.

Rowdy Miller battled through a shoulder injury and gave the Chargers 4.1 solid innings. Aidan Smith entered in the fifth and scattered two hits in his 2.2 innings of work and didn't give up a run or a walk. His only strike out was for the last out of the game.

Boerne vs. Sinton

It was a wild day for the Boerne High baseball team on Friday after the Greyhounds played Sinton in two games for the right to advance to the state tournament at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi.

After dropping Game 1 on Thursday at Wolff Stadium, Boerne bounced back to win a wild Game 2 that went 3.5 hours, 9 innings and had two Sinton players and two Sinton assistant coaches ejected. The Pirates scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up at 5-5 before BHS won it in nine innings 8-5 to force a third game.

It was all Sinton in that third game as the Pirates won 9-0 to advance to the state tournament.

No doubt, BHS coach Bill Merrell will remember the day after both games took about a combined 7 hours to complete. Merrell is resigning from the position as head coach and is retiring after 14 years with the Greyhounds and 44 years in coaching.
