The annual Boerne Champion spring football game was held May 17 before a capacity crowd at Charger Field.

The offense won the game, 68-54, over the defense and it was the first Navy vs. White Spring Football Game for Blane Ellis as the head coach and he said everybody did a great job.

“We were impressed with our energy and effort,” Ellis said. “That is something we have worked on over the offseason and it was great to see us make improvements and headed in the right direction.”

Ellis was promoted from the defensive coordinator position to head coach last winter and with it came some changes to the staff.

After Ellis stepped up into the head coaching spot, the defensive coordinator position was taken over by longtime assistant Alan Ford, while Kevin Brown will serve as the offensive coordinator. Brown has been with UTSA over the years and had a short stint at Boerne High in between his time at UTSA.

Ellis said both sides of the ball played well in the game.

“Defensively, we ran to the ball very well and did a tremendous job of tackling. Offensively, we were very excited about our explosive plays and how we moved the ball,” he said. “On both sides, we are going to continue to focus on finishing drives.”

The offense earns points by scoring and the defense picks up points with stops and turnovers.

This is the ninth spring game and the offense has won seven of them, including the last six. The 2020 contest was cancelled because of COVID-19.
