MARION – Boerne High played a doubleheader with Navarro on Friday and won both games to close out their best-of-three series in one day.
The Hounds topped the Panthers in a couple of close games, 4-3, and 3-0, to advance to the next round. Boerne is 32-4 overall and faces Robstown in a best-of-three series, all in Jourdanton in the fourth round or regional semifinals.
Game 1 is Friday at 7 p.m., Game 2 is Saturday at 5 p.m. and a third game, if needed, will follow 30 minutes after the second game.
Game 1
Navarro took the early lead in Friday’s Game 1 after its first two batters reached base and scored. A bad throw on an infield grounder allowed the first batter on and advanced him to second after the throw went into the dugout. The next batter singled to score a run and that batter later scored on another single and the Panthers were up 2-0.
With one out, Boerne turned a double play after a catch by Brooks Perez in centerfield. Perez then threw to first base to get the runner out after he left the base and didn’t tag to end the inning and limit the damage.
It stayed at 2-0 until the Greyhounds made their move in the fifth. BHS sent 11 batters to the plate and scored 4 runs. The Hounds put its first four batters on before the Panthers could get an out.
Hudson McNew started with a single, Cale Blalock was hit by a pitch and then Walker Hill laid down a bunt and a bad throw to third allowed Hill on base and scored a run to make it 2-1. Perez singled to tie it up at 2-2 and then Hill scored on a Hutson Hendrix slow roller. Hendrix hustled down the line and beat the throw to first and was safe and the score was 3-2.
Later in the inning, a bases- loaded walk to Dylan Perez brought in another run and the Hounds had doubled up Navarro at 4-2 after starting the inning with a 2-run deficit.
McNew, who started off the inning with a single, batted twice in the inning.
The Panthers trimmed the lead to a single run in the sixth after a batter reached on a two-out walk and a courtesy runner stole second. The runner attempted to steal third and the pickoff throw to third went to the outfield and allowed him to make it home.
Boerne pitcher Xander Cloudy struck out the next batter to end the inning but it was 4-3.
The Hounds loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but couldn’t push in any insurance runs and it stayed at 4-3 going into the seventh.
Navarro had its last chance to tie or take the lead, but the Panthers went down in order in the seventh. Two nice catches by Brooks Perez in centerfield helped retire the first two batters. From there, Cloudy struck out the next batter for the final out.
Cloudy went all 7 innings and threw 95 pitches. He fanned 6, walked 1 and gave up 4 hits and 3 earned runs.
Brooks Perez led the BHS offense with 2 singles, while Cam Johnson, Hutson Hendrix, Hudson McNew and Cale Blalock all singled.
Game 2
Boerne pitcher Landon Lestourgeon threw a gem to close out their series with Navarro. The senior tossed a 1-hitter in Game 2 to help the Hounds win 3-0.
Lestourgeon had the right stuff as he tossed a 1-hitter, struck out 9 and only walked 2. The pitcher took a no-hitter into the seventh before the Panthers were able to record a hit, a double.
A walk with two outs put runners at the corners but Lestourgeon shut the door on Navarro with his ninth strikeout to end the game.
Offensively, the Greyhounds scratched for one run at a time. In the first, Riley Pechacek reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and then scored on a Hutson Hendrix single for the 1-0 lead.
In the second, Dylan Perez doubled, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a Cale Blalock sac fly to centerfield and it was 2-0.
The Greyhounds added another run in the third after Brooks Perez walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a Cam Johnson ground out. Perez later scored on a wild pitch and the BHS lead held at 3-0, which was all they needed with Lestourgeon and the rest of the defense not allowing a run.
The Hounds had 4 hits in the game, a double from Dylan Perez and singles from Cam Johnson, Riley Pechacek and Hutson Hendrix. Hendrix and Blalock picked up RBIs and Brooks Perez, Pechacek and Dylan Perez scored one run each.
