JOURDANTON – The Boerne High softball team advanced to the regional finals or fifth round after the Lady Greyhounds defeated Alice Thursday night in Jourdanton, 7-2, in a one-game playoff.

BHS improves to 29-9 and plays the winner of the Calallen – Needville winner. Calallen took Game 1 Thursday night.

The number 13 proved to be pretty lucky for the Lady Hounds Thursday against the Coyotes. Boerne’s offense came up with 13 hits against Alice ace and OLLU signee Ava Hernandez, while Boerne pitcher, No. 13 Ava Rodriguez, struck out 13 batters, including Hernandez to end the game.

Heidi Maytum swung a hot bat against Hernandez and doubled in the first to bring in a couple of runs for the 2-0 lead Boerne would never relinquish. Maytum also hit 2 singles and took a walk to make it on base all four times she batted The catcher was 3 for 3 and had Boerne’s first 3 RBIs in the game.

It was 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth when Boerne broke it open with 3 runs and recorded 5 hits in the inning, including a 2-RBI double from Ava Nieto and another double by Taylor Wilson, along with an RBI single from Taryn Madlock.

Chargers 4, SV 1

Champion took the first game Thursday against Smithson Valley, 4-1, in theirbest- of-three series in San Antonio. Game 2 was Friday night, and a third game if needed, will take place Saturday.

The Rangers scored their only run in the first inning for the quick 1-0 lead and held it until the third when Champion scored all 4 of its runs.

Two walks, 2 singles, a fielder’s choice and an error helped the Chargers plate their 4 runs.

In the seventh, Smithson Valley put its first two batters on with no outs, but Charger pitcher Rowdy Miller struck out the next batter for the first out.

Aidan Smith entered for Miller, who was at 105 pitches, and struck out the first batter he faced for the second out. From there, Smith got the final out with a line drive to left to end the game.

Miller improved to 12-0 this year, while Smith picked up the save.

Nic Cortez, Ethan Harrison and Sam Miller accounted for all 3 Charger hits, while Harrison, Evan Kuhl, Andrew Frei and Jordan Ballin scored runs.
