Geneva’s best baseball season in program history came to a heartbreaking end after the Eagles were defeated in the TAPPS DIII state semifinals Monday night in Arlington by Cypress Christian on the final play of the game.
With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors scored the game-winning run in walkoff fashion to record the 6-5 victory.
Geneva finishes its season at 28-4, and if there’s any consolation for the Eagles, they did fall to the eventual state champions Warriors team that went on to win the title the next day.
Monday’s game didn’t start until about 8:20 p.m. and went past 11 p.m. before it was decided. The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the second after a walk to Colton Lutz and a double by Guy George brought in a run.
The Warriors fired back with 5 runs in the bottom of the second and did a lot of its damage with two outs. Cypress Christian had runners on first and second but only had one out left, however they responded by putting the next four batters on and pushing in 5 runs. The Warriors finished the inning with 2 singles, 3 walks and a double and sent nine batters to the plate in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
It stayed that way until the top of the sixth when the Eagles had a big inning to tie it up. Geneva also put together a two-out rally of its own.
Grant Roberson singled but the next two Eagle batters were retired. Roberson’s courtesy runner, Brady Chandler moved to second on a George Viña single. A walk to Colton Lutz loaded the bases and then Shawn George singled to bring in a couple of runs and make it 5-3.
A Guy George double pushed in two more runs and it was knotted up at 5-5 before the Warriors recorded the third out in the frame.
In the seventh, Geneva put two runners on with a walk and hit batter and only had one out, but a strikeout and a fly ball to left ended the threat and took the game to the bottom of the inning where Cypress Christian won it.
The first Warrior batter struck out but a walk, intentional walk and another walk loaded the bases. The next batter hit the ball to the right field and pushed in the game winner.
Geneva outhit the Warriors, 7-3, and were led at the plate by Guy George, who finished with 3 doubles and 3 RBIs. Grant Roberson, Cannon Menn, George Viña and Shawn George all hit singles.
Shawn George pushed in 2 runs, Colton Lutz scored twice, while Viña, Brady Chandler and Gray Bruner all scored a run.
Jake Roberson, Shawn George and Guy George all tossed in the game where it was all hands on deck. Roberson went 2 innings and gave up 3 hits and 3 walks, Shawn George fanned 3, walked 2 and didn’t give up a hit in 3 innings, while Guy George tossed 1.1 innings and yielded no hits, 3 walks and struck out 4.
