Boerne High’s perfect playoff run continues after the Hound hardball team swept El Campo last weekend in two different locations.
BHS took Game 1 on Thursday in Del Valle, 4-3, in extra innings. Game 2 was moved to Marion on Friday for an afternoon contest to stay ahead of the weather and the Greyhounds closed it out with a 3-0 shutout win.
The Hounds reached the 30-win plateau and are 30-4 overall. They’ll face Navarro in a best-of-three series with all games in Marion. Games 1 and 2 are Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., if needed.
Game 1
The Greyhounds had to go extra innings to take Game 1 after Walker Hill put the ball in play to score the winning run from third and give BHS the 4-3 win.
Boerne held a 3-2 lead going into the seventh but El Campo tied it in the top half of the inning with a couple of singles and a double. The Ricebirds had runners at second and third with two outs and had a chance to push in the go-ahead run, but the El Campo base runner was thrown out at home trying to steal the bag to keep it tied and send it to the bottom of the seventh.
The Hounds put the first runner on, Cam Johnson, with a walk but weren’t able to score and the game went to the eighth.
In the eighth, El Campo put a runner on first with a single. He tried to steal second but was thrown out on the base paths by catcher Hutson Hendrix to keep it at 3-3, setting the stage for the Hounds to win it in the bottom of the inning.
Dylan Perez was hit by a pitch with one out to start the at bat. Cale Blalock doubled and moved Perez to third. That brought up Walker Hill, who fouled off three pitches before putting the ball in play to the El Campo second baseman. Perez scored on the play to give Boerne the walk-off win, 4-3.
Earlier in the game, BHS was leading 2-0 in the first, but El Campo answered with a couple of runs in the top of the third to tie it at 2-2.
Cam Johnson tripled in the third and later scored on a Hudson McNew single to give Boerne a 3-2 lead. It stayed that way until the top of the seventh when the Ricebirds tied it.
El Campo outhit the Hounds, 9-7, but Boerne had timely hits. Cam Johnson tripled, Cale Blalock doubled and hit 2 singles, while Brooks Perez, Hutson Hendrix and Hudson McNew all singled once. Brooks Perez also walked twice.
Johnson scored twice, Riley Pechacek plated a run and Dylan Perez recorded the game-winning run. Hendrix, Jace Preston and McNew all drove in a run, while Hill picked up the game-winning RBI.
Landon Lestourgeon started on the hill and went 6.2 innings. He gave up 7 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk and struck out 6.
Xander Cloudy faced 2 batters and ended the seventh inning. He yielded 1 hit, no walks or runs. Johnson pitched in the eighth and picked up the win after giving up 1 hit and no runs.
Game 2
After facing a couple of batters on Thursday, Xander Cloudy returned on Friday and closed out the series with the Ricebirds.
Cloudy scattered 2 hits, gave up 3 walks and struck out 7, and picked up his second shutout victory of the playoffs after the Hounds won 3-0.
In the third, Cale Blalock singled to start the inning. His courtesy runner, Caleb Cloutier, moved to second on a Cloudy sacrifice and then advanced to third on a Walker Hill ground out. Cloutier late scored on a wild pitch and the Greyhounds were winning 1-0.
It stayed that way until the sixth when the Greyhounds scratched for another run. Cam Johnson started off the inning with a double and moved to third on a Jace Preston single.
From there, Dylan Perez grounded out to the right side of the infield and Johnson was able to score from third to make it 2-0.
The Hounds picked up one more run in the seventh after a Brooks Perez walk and a double by Riley Pechacek that moved Perez to third. Perez later scored on a wild pitch and Boerne’s lead was 3-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, El Campo put one runner on via a walk with two outs, but the next batter hit into a fielder’s choice and BHS recorded the out at second to end the game.
The Greyhounds finished with 7 hits, doubles by Cam Johnson and Riley Pechacek, with Johnson scoring a run. Jace Preston and Cale Blalock knocked out 2 singles apiece, while Hutson Hendrix also singled. Dylan Perez picked up an RBI, while Brooks Perez, Johnson and Caleb Cloutier all scored once.
