The Boerne High softball team won a pair of two-run ball games after the Lady Greyhounds defeated El Campo last week at Del Valle in the third round of the 4A playoffs, 4-2 and 2-0. BHS (28-9) advances to the fourth round where they’ll play a one-gamer Thursday against Alice in Jourdanton, 7 p.m.
Game 1
Boerne took Game 1 last Thursday in Del Valle, 4-2, and didn’t waste any time getting on the board.
In the first, Ava Nieto walked and Taryn Madlock reached on an error, which allowed Nieto to make it to third and scooted Madlock to second.
Nieto scored on a passed ball and Madlock moved to third on the same pitch and then scored on a Taylor Wilson single to make it 2-0 with no outs and only three batters into the game.
The Lady Hounds added to their lead in the second with another run. Riley Partin reached on an error and stole second. Cameron Cooper moved Partin to third on ground out and then Partin scored on a wild pitch for the 3-0 advantage.
El Campo made things interesting in the third when they loaded the bases with no outs after a walk, single and a hit batter. The next batter hit a sac fly to right and pushed in a run to make it 3-1. From there, the Boerne defense turned a double play to get out of the inning and keep the lead at two runs.
A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth trimmed the Greyhound lead to 3-2 but another double play in the inning helped Boerne limit the damage. In both double plays, Ava Renteria recorded the first of the two outs.
In the top of the fifth, Boerne picked up an insurance run after Ava Nieto singled to start the inning. Madlock sacrificed Nieto to second, who then moved to third on a passed ball. From there, Wilson came up with another timely hit, a single that scored Nieto and gave Boerne a 4-2 lead.
The Ricebirds were the home team and put runners on during each of the final three at bats in the fifth through seventh frames, but couldn’t score anymore runs.
BHS pitcher Ava Rodriguez threw 119 pitches in the game and gave up 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and fanned 8. Of her 119 pitches, 79 were strikes.
El Campo actually outhit Boerne after they had 6 hits and BHS finished with 5 hits. Taylor Wilson had 2 big singles that scored 2 runs, while Ava Rodriguez, Ava Nieto and Ryleigh Hastings all singled. Nieto scored twice, while Taryn Madlock and Riley Partin crossed home plate once.
Game 2
After only allowing 2 runs in Game 1, the Boerne defense didn’t allow a run in Game 2 on Friday as BHS pitcher Ava Rodriguez threw a 1-hitter.
El Campo didn’t record its one hit until the fifth inning and put a runner on in the second with an error, but those were its only two base runners all game after Rodriguez didn’t walk a batter and the Boerne defense only committed one error.
Offensively, Boerne got on the board early just like they did in the first game of the series.
In the first inning, Taryn Madlock walked, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. She later scored on a Taylor Wilson RBI ground out for the 1-0 lead.
In the second frame, Ava Renteria singled and later scored on a hard hit by Cameron Cooper that was misplayed by the El Campo defense and allowed Renteria to make it home for the 2-0 lead.
It was a defensive struggle after that as neither team scored the rest of the way and El Campo only put one base runner on in the final five innings.
Boerne finished with 4 hits in the game, including a double by Taryn Madlock, 2 singles by Ava Renteria and another single by Taylor Wilson, while Ryleigh Hastings took 2 walks and Cameron Cooper reached on an error.
Madlock and Renteria scored once and Wilson came up with an RBI.
