Champion boys win regional title, girls team places second

SAN ANTONIO – The Champion boys track and field team ran away with the Region IV-5A title last Saturday at Heroes Stadium, while the Lady Chargers almost made it a sweep after they finished second by a few points.

SAN ANTONIO – The Champion boys track and field team ran away with the Region IV-5A title last Saturday at Heroes Stadium, while the Lady Chargers almost made it a sweep after they finished second by a few points.

It’s the second regional championship in track and field for the boys, while the girls also have one in their history and were 8 points away from claiming their second.

It wasn’t even close on the boys’ side after Champion tallied 89 points to beat Smithson Valley (63) by 26 points where at least 36 teams scored a point. The Lady Chargers scored 84 points for second behind Smithson Valley (91), where at least 35 schools scored a point.

The top 2 finishers advance to the 5A state meet scheduled for Friday, May 12, while the third-place finisher has a shot at a wildcard. The top 6 score points.

Varsity Boys

Brock Lewis claimed an individual regional title after he won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.39, while Ben Blomqvist came in third after running a 14.62. Blomqvist placed second in the 300 hurdles after clocking in at 38.78 and Lewis was fifth with a 40.17.

Luis Tovar qualified for state after he finished second in the 800 with a time of 1:56.25 and Caleb Dehart was sixth in the race to score a point after turning in a time of 2:00.36.

In relay events, Champion’s 4x100 of Corbin Mitchell, Sawyer Bolli, Ranger Lewis and Arlis Adickes teamed up for fourth with a time of 42.50, while the 4x200 of Luke Rossi, Bolli, Ranger Lewis and Adickes came in fifth after combining for a time of 1:31.51.

In field events, Joshua Hierholzer won the triple jump with a measurement of 46-04 and Hayden Brace finished third at 45-04.25, while in the long jump, Hierholzer placed third after leaping 22-05.5 and Brace was fourth at 21-11.75.

Griffin Jones and Ben Blomqvist earned points in the high jump after they both cleared 6-2 to finish fourth and fifth.

Brooks Jones was fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 14-06 and Connor Warzecha flung the discus 171- 03 for third and Warzecha qualified as a wildcard.

Ephraim Tonn-Bourg also competed in two wheelchair events and finished first in the 100 at 16.82 and placed second in the 400 with a 1:04.30.

Varsity Girls

Beth Leachman won a regional title after she took first in the 1600 with a time of 4:58.93. Leachman was also winning in the 3200 the day before but dropped out of the race before she finished.

Vanesa Gonzalez punched her ticket to state after she was second in the 100 dash with a time of 11.70 and Mariela Gonzalez placed second in the 200 dash after clocking in at 24.47.

Kendall Fallon came in second in the 300 hurdles with a 45.31 and Addison Hankins was fourth in the race after running a 45.63. Hankins also finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.93.

The 4x200 consisting of Madison Meinke, Vanesa Gonzalez, Mariela Gonzalez and Erin Fallon finished second to qualify for state after recording a 1:41.96, while the 4x100 of Meinke, both Gonzalez girls and Fallon placed third with a time of 47.94. Also, the 4x400 of Addison Hankins, Erin Fallon, Destiney Rose and Kendall Fallon came in third after combining for a time of 3:58.89.
