Keep up with all the library happenings

THE BOOKWORM

THE BOOKWORM

Another taxing season has ended The library staff are amazed at all the hard work the good folks at AARP did to assist people with their federal tax returns. In less than three months, they filed more than 1500 tax returns! We are so grateful to AARP for providing this free service to the public! By the way, next year please don’t wait until the last minute to get an appointment. The program begins in early February and typically lasts until Tax Day. We turned away a number of disappointed people who called just a few days before April 18, and that’s our least favorite thing to do as customer service-minded people.

Magical history tour On Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. history lovers have the opportunity to learn more about the San Saba Presidio and Mission, located in Menard, which is west of Boerne. The event is open to the public, but we do ask that you RSVP to Robin Stauber atstauber@boernelibrary. org. For more information about the actual program, please contact Bryden Moon at [email protected].

Orchestra concert We are pleased to be teaming up with Boerne Champion High School to bring you a fine performance by the Champion Charger Orchestra. This free concert takes place at the amphitheater on Thursday, May 11, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Since the event will take place outside, please bring blankets or chairs to make yourselves more comfortable.

Author signing On Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., during our monthly Second Saturday Author Signing, you will have the opportunity to meet author Joseph A. Schiller. He has written “Upon the Arrival of Dawn,” which offers up a bit of mystery, science fiction and fantasy. Schiller will be in the lobby to talk about his work and to sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.

The Liars are back! Our monthly Live! at the Library event in May will feature our 5th Annual Liars Contest. What is a liars contest anyway? It’s actually an opportunity for excellent storytellers to get up on stage at the amphitheater and tell us some tall tales. They will be judged by a group of local celebrities and dignitaries, with one of the performers coming out on top with the best storytelling. This event, which takes place on Thursday, May 18, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., is free, family friendly, and a delightful way to spend a spring evening. Please bring chairs or blankets to make yourselves more comfortable. We also encourage you to bring a picnic supper to enjoy eating while being “lied” to.

A brand-new calendar We’re excited to announce that our web calendar has undergone an amazing transformation! You can now get a visual idea of everything that’s going on with the library. You can do keyword searches, or you can just click on specific categories and tags to find programs that are just right for you. If you get overwhelmed by all the pictures you have the option to change the calendar view at the top of it. Just visit boernelibrary.org to check it out.

Summer fun around the corner! Our Summer Learning Program officially begins June 5. The theme this year is “A Reading Star g is Born,” so you’ll get to enjoy a variety of programs featuring Hollywood. We offer events and activities for all age groups. Starting Tuesday, May 30, children and teens can come in to pick up their brochures and reading logs. In addition to the brochure, you can visit our new web calendar and enter the search term “Star” to see just the summer programming. Please take advantage of all these free events. Your children won’t suffer from “summer reading slide” if they participate, and adults will get the opportunity to have fun while attending entertaining, informative events, and reading Hollywood-based books. NOTE: There will be no children’s programming during the month of May.

Library closure The library will be closed Monday, May 29, in observance of Memorial Day; however, we will be open on Saturday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The library’s partnership with Boerne Independent School District to display students’ art during the month of April, has once again amazed hundreds of library visitors. The art was creative, sophisticated, and beautiful.
