CELEBRATING THE ARTS

CELEBRATING THE ARTS

The play by Eric Simonson and based on the book, When Pride Still Mattered -- A Life of Vincent Lombardi, written by David Maraniss, and directed by Sherri Small. May 4 -- 21. The real story of Lombardi the man --his inspirations, his passions and ability to drive people to achieve what they never thought possible. Krause House Theatre, home of S.T.A.G.E., Inc., 1300 Bulverde Road, Bulverde. Make reservations online at www.stagebulverde. org, or call 830-438-2338.

Lombardi was as outstanding a student as he was an athlete while attending Fordham University. On the football field he was one of a group of linemen referred to as the “Seven Blocks of Granite”. He studied law at Fordham, received his undergraduate degree in Business, briefly played semi-professional football, and shortly thereafter began coaching high school football. Previous to his hiring as Head Coach and General Manager for the Green Bay Packers, he coached at Fordham, the US Military Academy at West Point and the New York Giants. In his second year, Green Bay led the NFL’s Western Conference, followed by two league championships and two Super Bowl wins.

Lombardi imposed what some critics say was an unusually difficult regimen, but players who survived remained forever loyal to him. He succeeded as a motivator rather than an innovator; however, his teams were recognized for the signature play known as the Green Bay Sweep. In this play the ball carrier ran around the end, accompanied by a host of blockers. Eventually every football team added the game to their playbooks. After retiring as the Green Bay coach, he joined the Washington Redskins as coach, general manager and part owner. In his second year he led the team to its first winning season in 14 years. The Super Bowl trophy was named in his honor in 1971.

Motivating others is an art form-- and takes hard work requiring thought, attention to detail, know-how, and most importantly, flexibility to individual differences. “Real motivation is the task of creating conditions to which the natural response of ordinary people is to accomplish extraordinary things.” (Motivation in the Real World, Dutton, 1992).
