After getting run ruled by the Champion softball team in the first round of district (14-4), Pieper turned around and defeated the Lady Chargers in the second round on Friday, 9-4, to split the season series. Both teams won at home.
Champion is 12-13 overall and 6-6 in district, just ahead of Veteran Memorial (5-7). This is the final week of the regular season and the Lady Chargers are currently in fourth place in 26-5A heading into Tuesday.
They have to finish in the top four if they are going to make the playoffs, but they have a tough week ahead. Champion hosted Smithson Valley on Tuesday before closing out the regular season Friday at Seguin.
On Friday, Champion had the bases loaded in the first with two outs but only pushed in 1 run to take the early 1-0 lead.
Pieper had a strong start to the game and scored 7 runs in the first two innings and used the long ball to take control.
The Warriors scored 3 in the first and hit a 2-run homer, and then in the second, Pieper smacked a grand slam for the 7-1 lead.
It stayed that way until the fifth when the Chargers cut into the lead with a couple of runs to make it 7-3, but the Warriors answered in the bottom half of the inning and bumped the lead back to 6 runs at 9-3.
Champion had one last chance in the top of the seventh and had a promising start as Kassidy Kureska doubled to start the inning, while Lilly Ritchie and Ava Trevino both recorded singles with one out, but the Warriors pitcher Alyse Palombo got the next two batters to ground out and end the game.
Champion finished with 7 hits including the double by Kureska, who also drove in a run, while Emily Young doubled as well and scored twice.
Dakota Salazar singled, Riley Murrish hit 2 singles and scored a run, Ritchie singled and drove in a run, Trevino singled and Aby Brehmer scored once.
Trevino threw 116 pitches in the game and gave up 7 hits, 8 earned runs, walked 8 and fanned 4 and took the loss from the circle.
