There was a big difference in the way the Holy Cross baseball played in their two meetings with Geneva School of Boerne this year.
In their first contest in Boerne, the Eagles thumped the Knights, 21-1, but last Thursday, Holy Cross played much better and avenged their first-round loss to Geneva by beating them, 3-2.
Geneva is 22-3 overall and hosts Corpus Christi John Paul II in a doubleheader on Wednesday. In their three losses this year, the Eagles have only lost by a combined 4 runs.
In Thursday’s game, Holy Cross scored all three of its runs in the first inning and used a bases-clearing double to do so after three batters reached on a walk and two singles.
In the second, Sam Armstrong singled and later scored to make it 3-1. It stayed that way until the seventh inning in Thursday’s defensive struggle.
An error and a double brought in Guy George and the lead was down to 3-2 with one out, but the Knights defense got out of the jam with a ground out and a fly out to end the game.
Geneva outhit Holy Cross 9-4 but still came up short.
C. Lutz finished with a double and two singles, Guy George singled and scored, Grant Roberson singled, Cannon Menn knocked out 2 singles, Sam Armstrong singled and scored and Shawn George singled.
Jake Roberson went 5 innings on the hill and took the loss. He gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and struck out 9, while Guy George threw in the sixth and walked 1 and fanned 2 and didn’t give up a hit or a run.
