Comfort wraps up district title in softball

On Friday, the Deer walloped the Warriors from Ingram, 20-0, and then on Monday the Deer beat the Buffaloes of Florence, 7-1, to close out the regular season.

Comfort’s win on Friday also wrapped up this year’s district title, their first since 2004, ending a drought of 19 seasons.

Monday’s game with Florence was a make-up game from a few weeks ago that was pushed back because of the weather and it was also the regular- season finale.

Comfort is 17-11 and went 9- 1 in district. They’ll start the playoffs next week.

Vs. Florence

Even though the Deer had the district title secured, they didn’t let up against the Lady Buffs and won 7-1.

Florence actually scored first with a single run in the second inning, but Comfort responded with 4 runs in the bottom half of the frame.

With two outs, Kendyl Rust hit a triple that brought in a run and tied it up. A Morgan Hansen double and an Emma Wardlaw single also helped to secure some runs and put the Deer ahead 4-1.

Rust doubled in the fourth and later scored, while Wardlaw walked and her courtesy runner, Brianna Ornelas, also scored in the inning to extend Comfort’s lead to 6-1.

In the fifth, Layla Castro singled and moved to second on a sac bunt by Tori Hernandez. Rust then singled to bring in Castro and make it 7-1. Neither team scored after that.

Comfort finished with 8 hits and were led by Kendyl Rust who almost hit for the cycle and finished with a triple, double and single, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored to go with a walk, Morgan Hansen doubled and singled, picked up 2 RBI and also walked once, Emma Wardlaw hit 2 singles, walked and pushed in a run, Kaydence Stehling took 2 walks, Layla Castro singled and scored and Kippy Sterling walked twice and plated a run.

Wardlaw took the win from the circle and tossed 105 pitches. She struck out 9, walked 1, gave up 3 hits and only 1 earned run.

Vs. Ingram

The Deer jumped on the Warriors with 8 runs in the first and 6 more in the second and third frames to get its 20 runs and end the game after three innings.

Comfort had 16 hits, 6 of them doubles. Kendyl Rust finished with 2 singles and a single, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, Hope Van Geffen doubled and hit 3 singles, drove in 3 runs and scored 3 times, Morgan Hansen doubled and singled, walked, pushed in 2 runs and scored a run, Emma Wardlaw singled, Kaydence Stehling walked and scored twice, Katie Haffner doubled and singled, collected 3 RBI and scored 3 runs, Layla Castro hit 2 singles, had an RBI and scored 2 runs, Tori Hernandez doubled and drove in a run and scored 2 times, while Kippy Sterling singled, scored 2 runs and picked up 3 RBI.

Wardlaw picked up the win on 25 pitches and turned in a 3-inning perfect game after she only faced nine batters. She didn’t walk a batter, give up a hit or a run and struck out 5 and the defense didn’t allow a runner on base.
