The Boerne Champion softball team was at home for two games earlier this week. The Chargers lost to NB Canyon on Monday but had a dramatic win over Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday to split the two games.
Champion is 12-12 this season and is 6-5 in district as they fight for a playoff spot. The Chargers are currently in fourth place heading into Friday’s game at Pieper. They close out the regular season at home Tuesday vs. Smithson Valley and visit Seguin on Friday.
Vs. Kerrville Tivy
Champion was trailing 4-2 as Tuesday’s game went into the bottom of the sixth, but the Chargers were able to tie it in the sixth and win it in the eighth, 5-4.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Finley Rice walked and then Dakota Salazar singled to put two runners on. From there, Riley Murrish tripled to bring in Rice and Salazar and the game was knotted up at 4-4.
The next Charger batter had a solid hit but it went right into the glove of the Tivy left fielder to send it to the seventh where nobody scored after both teams put one runner on base.
In the eighth, a Tivy batter walked with one out but Champion pitcher Ava Rodriguez struck out the next two Antler batters to end the inning.
In the bottom of the frame, Alison Kory singled with one out and moved to second after the right fielder bobbled the ball. Salazar came up and lined a single to left field, moving Kory to third but the throw from the outfield missed the cutoff and Kory scored from third to end it.
Salazar finished with 3 hits, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, Murrish tripled, brought in 2 runs and scored once, Emily Young singled, Kassidy Kureska doubled and drove in a run, Lilly Ritchie singled, Kory singled and scored and Rice walked twice and scored once.
Ava Trevino was the winning pitcher and threw 131 pitches in the game She gave up 6 hits, 4 runs, struck out 15 and walked 5.
Vs. NB Canyon
The Cougarettes won Monday’s game 12-0 in five innings. NBC tallied 2 runs in the first, 2 more in the fourth and then closed it out with 8 in the fifth behind 7 hits.
Champion only recorded 1 hit in the game, a single by Lilly Ritchie in the second inning. No other Charger made it on base after the Canyon pitching staff didn’t issue a single walk, struck out 12 and the defense didn’t commit an error.
The Chargers used three different pitchers in the game after Ava Trevino went 3 innings and gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs with 4 walks. Mylie Parker went 1.1 innings and gave up 4 hits, while Finley Rice threw in the top of the fifth and yielded a hit.
