After giving up two runs in the first inning to Veteran Memorial on Tuesday, the Chargers softball team played shutout ball the rest of the way and went on to defeat the Lady Patriots, 4-2.

Champion improves to 11-11 overall and 5-4 in district. They hosted New Braunfels Canyon Thursday and welcome Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s win gives the Lady Chargers the season split with Veterans Memorial as they fight for a playoff spot. It also moves Champion (5-4) ahead of the Lady Pats (4-5) in the district standings. The Chargers are currently in fourth place going into Thursday’s game with NB Canyon.

In the first inning of Tuesday’s game, Veterans Memorial put its first five batters on base to get its two runs.

The 2-0 lead held until the third when Kassidy Kureska put the Chargers on top with a 3-run homer for the 3-2 advantage. Kureska brought in Riley Murrish and Emily Young, who both reached on singles.

In the fourth frame, Alison Kory singled and scored on a Dakota Sala- zar double to make it 4-2, which is where it stayed until the end.

Champion’s defense turned a double play in the bottom of the fourth and also had another one earlier in the game for two on the night to help pitcher Ava Trevino.

Trevino tossed 98 pitches, gave up 5 hits, 1 earned run, 3 walks and struck out 2 to get the win.

Kureska finished with 3 RBI, Murrish doubled and singled, picked up an RBI and scored once, Young hit 2 singles and scored, Marlena Spurrier singled and walked, Trevino singled, while Kory singled and scored.
