The Charger baseball team dropped its district game with New Braunfels Canyon on Friday but Champion did rebound on Saturday to defeat Clark in a non-district contest.
Champion plays a series with Kerrville Tivy this week, Tuesday at Tivy and at home on Thursday. They are 17-6-1 overall and 4-2 in district.
Vs. NB Canyon
The Chargers were up 1-0 at the end of one, but Canyon scored in five straight innings – from the second through the sixth – to get its 8 runs. Champion tried to rally late and plated single runs in the fifth and sixth frames but would get no closer.
The Chargers had more hits than the Cougars, 7-6, but only recorded 2 RBI compared to the NBC team that had 5 RBI.
Ethan Harrison and Cam Logan both finished with 2 hits in the game, with Logan knocking out 2 singles and Harrison hitting a double and a single. Harrison also scored a run and took a walk.
Jordan Ballin singled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored 2 of their 3 runs, Quinn Grable singled and picked up an RBI, while Garland Whitehead singled.
Jackson Melanson tossed 4 innings and gave up 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 walk and fanned 5.
Jacob Schwope threw 2 innings and Robbie Vela went an inning. Schwope yielded a hit, 2 earned runs, 4 walks and struck out 3, while Vela didn’t give up a hit or run, walked 1 and sat down 1.
Vs. Clark
After Clark had cut Champion’s lead down to 4-2, the Chargers put the game away with a 4-run sixth inning to secure the 8-2 victory.
Evan Kuhl hit a triple in that sixth inning and also singled, took a walk and collected 3 RBI in the game, while Quinn Grable doubled, hit 2 singles, scored 2 runs and drove in a run as Kuhl and Grable led the Chargers at the plate.
Jordan Ballin knocked out 2 singles and scored once, Cam Logan picked up an RBI, Gage Goldberg walked two times and scored a run, Grant Kinzel walked, Aidan Smith walked and pushed in a run, while Garland Whitehead walked and scored.
Aidan Smith was the winning pitcher in the game after he went 4 frames and threw 52 pitches. Smith didn’t surrender a run and only gave up 1 hit and 2 walks.
Matthew Booth went 2.1 innings on the bump and yielded 6 hits, 2 runs with no walks and Nate Mayo closed it out and got 2 outs on 3 pitches after the defense turned a double play.
