SAN ANTONIO – The Champion girls soccer team earned its second straight shutout in the 5A playoffs on Tuesday when the Lady Chargers defeated Medina Valley at Gustafson Stadium. Prior to that, Champion blanked Leander Rouse 2-0 in the first round and then caged the Panthers from Medina Valley 4-0 for a combined score of 6-0 in its first two rounds.
Champion is 11-11-1 overall and faced district foe Smithson Valley Friday on Friday at Ranger Field. They won the flip to host the match.
Smithson Valley swept the Chargers this year and won their first meeting 4-3 and took the second one, 3-0. The Lady Rangers are the No. 1 5A team in the state (TGCA poll) and undefeated at 24-0 going into Friday’s match.
The Lady Chargers knocked in two goals per half in Tuesday’s win over Medina Valley. They took four shots before they tallied their first goal. Addison Huber sent a through ball that Ava Godoy chased down and knocked in for the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
About a minute later, Reagan Burkey finished on an Ashlyn Plank pass and it was 2-0.
It stayed that way until early in the second half when Godoy tallied her second goal in the first minute for the 3-0 lead.
Jayme Harrell closed out the scoring later in the half on the Brinley Collins assist to make it 4-0.
Champion finished with 28 shots, with 20 of those on goal, while MV tallied 9 shots, all on goal.
Lola Vaughan and Maddie Micale were both in goal and combined for the shutout. Vaughan came up with 3 saves and Micale had 6 saves.
