SAN ANTONIO – Even though Tuesday’s second- round soccer playoff match looked like a blowout after the Boerne High boys defeated La Vernia, 7-1, BHS coach Michael Strong said it certainly didn’t feel like it.
“That La Vernia team they challenged us, the score didn’t reflect the game,” he said. “La Vernia is a regional tournament caliber team. They had a few chances that they would like to get back and that game could have looked very differently if a couple of shots go in for them and we miss a couple of shots, but I think we have some pretty special players and I think our talent was able to shine through.”
BHS improved to 24-3-2 overall and played Marble Falls on Friday in the third round.
Tuesday’s match was affected by a 30-minute lightening delay. It was 6-1 when the match was halted and the Hounds only scored once in the final 29 minutes once it resumed.
Their lone goal after the delay came from Jess Gonzales, who booted in a corner kick directly into the goal. The Gonzales goal was the only one not assisted after the other six were.
Bear Kelly turned in a hat trick with 3 goals, Shae Gonzales, Joe Ballenger and Jake Herman all finished with 1 goal each.
Ballenger and Herman recorded 2 assists each, while Kelly and Shae Gonzales both had 1 assist each.
