Comfort’s softball game with Blanco on Friday had plenty of momentum swings but the final break went in the direction of the Lady Panthers team that won the game, 10-9 in eight innings.
The Deer slip to 11-11 overall and suffer their first district loss to stand at 3-1 in 5-3A.
Friday’s evenly- matched contest featured seven ties or lead changes before the Lady Panthers won it.
Blanco jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but Comfort fired back with 4 runs in the top of the second for the 4-2 lead.
The Deer added a run in the third and 2 more in the fourth to open up a 7-2 advantage but the fun was just starting.
Blanco scratched for a run in the fourth to make it 7-3 and then tied it with 4 runs in the fifth to knot it up at 7-7.
Comfort went back on top in the sixth with a single run at 8-7, but the Panthers tied it in the bottom half of the inning and it was 8-8.
Neither team scored in the seventh and the game went to the eighth. The Deer pushed in a run in the top of the inning for the 9-8 advantage but Blanco still had to bat since they were the home team.
The first two Blanco batters were retired with a line out to first and a strikeout, but an error and a triple tied it at 9-9.
Comfort intentionally walked the next two batters to put the force in play with two outs but a single ended it from there to bring in the winning run from third.
Comfort outhit the Panthers, 13- 9, and received a double from Emma Wardlaw and a double from Layla Castro who also walked, scored a run and picked up an RBI.
Kendyl Rust knocked out 2 singles and drove in 2 runs, Tori Hernandez singled, Morgan Hansen hit 2 singles, pushed in 2 runs and scored twice, Kaydence Stehling singled and picked up an RBI, Hope Van Geffen knocked out 2 singles, scored twice and collected an RBI, Katie Haffner recorded 2 singles and drove in a run and Kippy Sterling singled, walked and scored twice.
Wardlaw went the distance in the circle and tossed 136 pitches. She fanned 10,walked 4 and only gave up 3 earned runs.
