Greyhounds hold off Hawks, 2-1

2-1

When Boerne High hosted Canyon Lake on Thursday, the Greyhounds had a promising start with 2 runs in the first inning but that would be it as BHS was held off the board over the next six frames.

However, those two runs were enough to carry Boerne to a 2-1 victory over the Hawks in Thursday’s low-scoring contest. BHS improves to 16-2 overall and 2-0 in district. The Greyhounds hosted Davenport on Tuesday and visit Wimberley on Friday.

BHS coach Bill Merrell was proud of his team for earning the win on Thursday but said they have to score more runs and not leave so many batters on base. They left the bases loaded twice in the contest.

“In two ball games we’ve stranded 23 runners, that’s something we’ve got to get fixed,” he said. “A lot of it has to do with trying too hard. Our job is to score the guy on third and not the guy on first. They know that, but they try so hard because they want to do so well, but that will come with experience.”

In the first inning, Brooks Perez singled and Riley Pechacek doubled. Cam Johnson followed and brought in both runners to make it 2-0.

With Johnson on base, the next two Boerne batters walked to load the bases with no outs, but two strike outs and a ground out ended the inning.

A similar thing happened in the fifth when Pechacek and Johnson started the inning with a single and a walk. Jace Preston singled after beating out a throw to first on a bunt and the bases were juiced with no outs, but again, the Hawks got out of the jam with a strikeout, pop up and a line out.

While the big hit that would have blown it open escaped the Hounds, the Hawks were struggling offensively as well against BHS pitcher Landon Lestourgeon, who scattered 5 hits over seven innings.

Lestourgeon went 6.2 innings and tossed 103 pitches. He gave up a solo home run in the sixth to account for Canyon Lake’s only run of the game.

The Hawks made it interesting in the seventh. Lestourgeon started the inning and struck out the first batter he faced. He walked the next batter and then fanned the third batter in the inning for two outs and a runner at first.

At that point, Merrell pulled the pitcher and moved Johnson from shortstop to the mound. Merrell said he wanted to let Lestourgeon finish but his pitch count was high and at that point of the game, the Hawks batters were seeing the pitcher for the fourth time.

“He was at 103 (pitches) and 80 has been his top this year so he went 20 more than what we normally do and he was a little gassed,” Merrell said. “We really don’t like to pitch a kid 100 this early in the season, maybe in the latter part of April and May, but he felt good and strong.”

Johnson walked the next batter to put runners at first and second, but then he got the second batter he faced to fly out to Perez in center field to end the game.

“Cam came in and got the job done,” Merrell said.

Boerne finished with 7 hits, doubles from Pechacek and Johnson, while Pechacek also singled and scored once and Johnson took a walk and picked up 2 RBI.

Brooks Perez hit 2 singles and scored a run, Jace Preston walked and singled and Walker Hill hit a single.
