The softball teams from Boerne Champion and Kerrville Tivy were engaged in a defensive struggle last Thursday when the Hill Country rivals met for a district game at Antler Field.
Only four total runs were scored and three of them belonged to the Lady Chargers team that went on to post a 3-1 victory.
Champion is 8-9 overall and improves to 2-2 in district. They hosted Pieper Tuesday and visit Smithson Valley on Friday.
The Lady Chargers scored first with a single run in the second inning. Kassidy Kureska doubled, moved to third on a ground out and then scored on a Lilly Ritchie RBI single for 1-0 lead.
Champion added to its lead in the fifth with two more runs. Ritchie started things off in the frame with a single and then Marlena Spurrier walked to put runners at first and second. Both moved up a base and then Dakota Salazar recorded a 2-RBI single to bring in Ritchie and Spurrier and make it 3-0.
Kerrville’s only run came in the bottom of the fifth when the Lady Antlers pushed in an unearned run off a hit batter and an error and it was 3-1.
That’s as close as Tivy came to catching the Chargers because in the sixth and seventh frames, they went down in order with three ground outs, two strike outs and a pop up.
The Antler bats really struggled against Charger pitcher Ava Trevino and only tallied one hit, a single in the second. Trevino fanned 10 batters, only walked 1 and gave up just 1 hit. The run Tivy scored was unearned.
Champion finished with 6 hits, including the double by Kassidy Kureska, who also singled and scored. Dakota Salazar knocked out 2 singles and collected 2 RBI, Lilly Ritchie hit 2 singles, pushed in a run and scored, while Marlena Spurrier crossed home plate once.
