Champion bats kept quiet against NB Canyon

Boerne Champion ran into a buzzsaw called Haley Carmona Tuesday when the Chargers softball team played at New Braunfels Canyon in a district contest.

Boerne Champion ran into a buzzsaw called Haley Carmona Tuesday when the Chargers softball team played at New Braunfels Canyon in a district contest.

Carmona was literally unhittable after she retired 15 straight Champion batters as the Cougarettes run ruled the Chargers 11-0 in five innings.

Champion slips to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in district. They were at Kerrville Tivy on Thursday and won a close one. They host Pieper on Tuesday. For results of Thursday’s game, see the Wednesday online edition of the Boerne Star.

Carmona didn’t give up a walk or allow a base runner in Tuesday’s contest. She retired the side in order in all five innings and struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced.

Emily Young grounded out in the first and Lilly Ritchie lined out to first base in the third and those were the only two batters that Carmona didn’t fan. Lilly only batted once but was the only Charger who didn’t strike against the unhittable Carmona.

With the Charger bats held in check, Canyon took the early lead with 3 runs in the first and 2 more in third for the 5-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the fifth when NBC blew it open and kicked in the mercy rule with 6 runs. The Cougarettes finished with 11 hits in the game.

Ava Trevino pitched for the Chargers and threw 89 pitches. She struck out 2 and only walked 1 batter in 4.1 innings of work.
