Boerne High was looking for its third straight regional title Saturday in Kingsville and the only team standing in its way was the last team to beat the Boerne boys in the regional championship round back in 2020.

Back in that 2020 game, Stafford won by a point, but in Saturday’s “revenge” contest between the Hounds and the Spartans, it was all Boerne as the BHS boys rolled to a 50-32 victory.

Boerne captures its third straight regional title and improves to 32-5 overall. They will play in the 4A state semifinals Friday in the Alamodome at the state tournament. Boerne faces Houston Washington at 3 p.m. The winner of that game faces the Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy – Canyon Randle winner Saturday at 7 p.m.

The three-year run as regional champs is unprecedented in Boerne ISD basketball history and it was almost four straight if not for that loss back in 2020.

This was a different Stafford team than in 2020 and while the Spartans did take the early 3-0 lead Saturday, that would mark the only time they had the upper hand against the Hounds on Saturday.

Koen Wolff drained a 3 and tied it at the 5:30 mark of the opening period and then Barrett Pape hit a 2-pointer followed by consecutive Trevor Agarwal 3-pointers and the Hounds were up 11-3 and the lead just kept building from there. Boerne made its first three 3s of the game.

Defensively, the Hounds were pressing to slow down the explosive Spartans and were then crowding the paint, daring Stafford to hit some 3-pointers but the Spartans only managed a 3 for 14 showing from beyond the arch in the game.

After holding an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Hounds went on an 8-2 run to start the second and build a double- digit lead at 19-8.

BHS closed out the first half on a 5-0 spurt after Houston Hendrix scored a 2-pointer and then Agarwal dropped in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to help the Hounds double up the Spartans at the break, 24-12.

The game slowed down in the third quarter and neither team hit in double figures, but the Hounds did outscore the Spartans, 9-8, and held a 16-point lead on three different occasions in the stanza.

After a Wolff bucket to start the fourth period, the Spartans made one final push to try and salvage its season. Stafford went on an 8-2 run and the Boerne lead was down to 9 points at 36-27 with 4:33 left but that’s as close as the Houston area school would get.

Pape and Hendrix combined for the next 7 Boerne points as the Hounds answered with a 7-2 run and the lead was back to 14 points at 43-29 with 1:49 left.

It was one last gasp for the Spartans after they hit a 3 with 1:35 on the clock to trim Boerne’s advantage to 11 but those would be their final points of the season.

Stafford missed on its next three trips down the court and then had to start fouling to stop the clock. The Hounds went to the line 11 times in the final 1:21 and made 7 FTs, including its last 5. The Pape free throws with 16 ticks left gave Boerne its biggest lead at 18 at 50-32 and that’s where it stayed until the end.

Pape led the team with 19 points, Agarwal hit three 3s and finished with 9, Wolff and Hendrix both scored 8, Colton Hoegemeyer added 4 and Sam Waters chipped in with 2.

Regional semifinals

The Greyhounds defeated a familiar face Friday night in Kingsville when they beat Somerset in the regional semifinals, 60-47.

Boerne may have won by 13 but the Bulldogs had the lead down to 5 points at 48-43 with three minutes left.

The Hounds closed out the game with a 12-4 run as Houston Hendrix and Colton Hoegemeyer tallied Boerne’s final 12 points.
