Geneva’s hopes of a state championship in girls basketball came up short Friday in Waco after the Eagles were defeated by Dallas Christian in the TAPPS 4A title tilt.

The Dallas Christian Chargers defeated Geneva School of Boerne, 41-27, to win its second TAPPS state title in a row, while the Eagles finish the season at 29-6.

Friday’s battle featured a matchup of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state.

The Chargers team, which won a title last year as a 5A team and came down a classification this school year, never trailed in the game as Geneva had a hard time getting its offense going.

The Eagles only tallied 5 points in each of the first two quarters for 10 halftime points and trailed at the break, 16-10.

Geneva played better in the third quarter and dropped in 10 but Dallas Christian played better as well and netted 16 to open up a 32-20 lead going into the final quarter.

The Chargers played keep away in the last stanza and burned clock, which caused problems for the Eagles because Geneva had to start fouling and had three players with four fouls in the final stanza before one of them fouled out.

Dallas Christian missed all four free-throw attempts in the third but they made enough in the fourth to keep the Eagles at bay.

The Chargers went 9 for 14 at the line in the final quarter and scored all 9 of its points at the stripe to outscore the Eagles 9-7.

Besides never trailing in the game, the Chargers outscored the Eagles in every quarter on their way to secure the title by 14 points.

Maegan Riebel led the Eagles with 11 points before fouling out and Kyra Petty was also in double digits with 10 points. Brynn Riebel netted 4 and Madeline Egbert added 2 as only four Geneva players scored in the game.

Both Riebel girls, Maegan and Brynn, along with Petty were named to the all-tournament team.

State semis

Geneva defeated Corpus Christi Incarnate Word in the state semis, 34-26. It marked Geneva’s fourth win over the Angels this year.

The Eagles were up 19-6 after one and never looked back from there.
