Friday’s second-round matchup between Boerne High and Iowa Colony from Alvin featured two state-ranked teams going at it, but the game didn’t really live up to the hype after the Greyhounds dominated and ran away with the victory.
The No. 7 Hounds defeated the No. 11 Pioneers, 54-32, and advanced to the third round of the 4A playoffs. The Boerne boys faced La Vernia Tuesday at Judson, 7 p.m. in the regional quarterfinals.
Iowa Colony is a new school, and the team had a lot of freshman and sophomores, while the Greyhounds have tons of playoff experience after winning the region the last two years and that experience showed after the first quarter.
It was close in the opening period with Boerne holding a 13-11 lead, but the Pioneers never hit in double digits the rest of the way, while the Hounds did it in the final three stanzas as well.
Boerne started to pull away in the second after taking the quarter, 12-4, and held a double-digit lead at halftime, 25-15.
Once the second half started, the Hounds had their best scoring quarter of the night after they doubled up Iowa Colony, 18-9, for the 43-24 advantage.
Boerne closed it out in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Pioneers 11-8 for the 22-point win.
Barrett Pape had a strong game and finished with 18 points, Houston Hendrix added 9, Koen Wolff scored 8, Colton Hoegemeyer and Hutson Hendrix netted 6 points each and Trevor Agarwal added 3.
