A big third inning by the Boerne High softball team was the difference in Tuesday’s home opener against Steele.
The Lady Greyhounds tallied 6 runs in that third frame and won by 5 runs over the Lady Knights, 9-4.
BHS improved to 6-2 overall and is entered in the Dripping Springs tournament this weekend.
Steele did outhit the Hounds, 8-6, but they also committed 7 errors in the game.
Boerne went up 3-0 in the first inning with Taylor Wilson driving in 2 of those runs with a single.
Steele cut the lead to one at 3-2 with 2 runs in the top of the second off a double, but the Lady Hounds responded in the bottom of the third with 6 runs.
Ava Rodriguez started off the inning with a solo homer and then 4 walks and 3 errors helped push in the other 5 runs to bump Boerne’s lead to 9-2.
The Lady Hounds didn’t score the rest of the way, but they didn’t have to. Steele pushed in single runs in the fifth and seventh frames but that’s as close as they came to catching the Boerne girls.
Ava Rodriguez hit the home run and also singled, picked up 2 RBI and scored once, Ava Nieto doubled and scored, while Taryn Madlock, Taylor Wilson and Ava Renteria all singled, with Wilson picking up 2 RBI.
Cameron Cooper took 2 walks and scored twice, Madlock, Wilson, Ava Renteria and Riley Partin all scored single runs in the game as well.
Rodriguez went 3.2 innings in the circle and picked up the win. She gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and fanned 5, while Renteria finished out the game and yielded 4 hits, only 1 earned run, sat down 5 and walked 1.
