Champion was on the road Tuesday for a non-district softball game with Harlandale and picked up a 10-8 victory over the Indians.
The Chargers improved to 3-5 overall and were entered in the Northeast ISD tourney that started Thursday and continues through Saturday.
Harlandale had a fast start and went up 5-1 before the Chargers turned in a couple of big innings to take the lead. Champion plated 4 runs in the top of the third to tie it up at 5-5, but the Indians scored 2 in the bottom of the frame to pull ahead 7-5.
The Chargers took the lead for good with another 4-run inning in the fifth for the 9-7 advantage. The Indians answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 1-run game at 9-8, but Champion added an insurance run in the top of the sixth for the final of 10-8 after neither team scored in the seventh.
Riley Murrish hit a 3-RBI triple in the fifth, Kassidy Kureska homered in the third and brought in 2 runs, Ava Trevino hit 3 singles and scored once, while Abby Brehmer and Madison Hall both knocked out 2 hits with Brehmer scoring twice.
Trevino was the winning pitcher and gave up 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 8 walks and struck out 10.
