Chargers fall in season opener to Knights

The Champion baseball team took a tough loss to open the 2023 season when the Chargers visited Steele and outhit the Knights (10-8) but took an 11-7 loss.

Champion starts the year at 0-1 and began play in the Northside Tournament this weekend.

Steele took the early lead over the Chargers and went up 9-0 before Champion could get on the board. The Knights plated 2 runs in the first, 4 more in the third and then added 3 runs in the fourth 9-0 lead.

The Chargers batted 10 players in the top of the fifth to get its 4 runs and used 2 hit batters, 2 walks and 2 singles to make it 9-4.

Steele answered in the bottom of the fifth frame with 2 runs to push the lead to 11-4 and those were their final runs of the game, while the Chargers tried to rally. 

Champion pushed in a single run in the top of the sixth and 2 more in the seventh, but the rally ended there.

Of Champion’s 10 hits, nine of them were singles as they had trouble pushing in runs. Jordan Ballin hit a double and a single, picked up 2 RBI and scored twice, Evan Kuhl finished with 2 hits and scored a run, while Gage Goldberg had the most hits with 3 singles and also picked up an RBI and scored once.

Cam Logan walked, scored and collected an RBI, Jared Wingo hit 2 singles, Braden Cain and Ethan Harrison both crossed home plate once with Harrison singling and picking up an RBI.

It was pitching by committee as five different Chargers had a turn on the mound. Aidan Smith went the longest at 3 innings, while Jacob Schwope, Andrew Paulson, Matthew Booth and Rowdy Miller all tossed in the game as well.

All five pitchers struck out at least one batter with Smith recording 3 strikeouts.
