SAN ANTONIO – Boerne High had a great start to Monday’s firstround playoff game against Kennedy at the Northside Sports Gym.

The Greyhounds were leading 24-0 in the first six minutes of the game and were up 30-6 by the end of the first period. BHS never looked back from there on its way to an 85-43 victory.

The Hounds improved to 28-5 overall and await the winner of the Iowa Colony – Royal game. Iowa Colony is ranked No. 11 and the Greyhounds are No. 7 so it’ll be a battle of state-ranked teams if Iowa Colony won on Tuesday night.

“There are no ranked teams playing each other for a while except us (if Iowa Colony wins) but you’re going to have to play them eventually so you might as well get them early,” BHS coach Kimble McHone said.

If the Hounds do play Iowa Colony, it’ll probably be a lot tougher than in Monday’s game where Boerne’s big lead forced JFK coach Isaac Gomez to burn two timeouts in the first 1:46 and a third one with five minutes left in the opening period.

The Hounds played so well; they didn’t give JFK any hope.

“The starters did a fantastic job of getting in the passing lanes and when we had the ball on offense, we were very efficient in the first half,” McHone said. “We put up a lot of points and held them down.’

Kennedy shot better in the second quarter and dropped in 12 points, but the Greyhounds tallied 19 and took a 49-18 lead into halftime.

Barrett Pape had the hot hand early with 13 points in the first quarter and 18 by halftime, while Trevor Agarwal hit a couple of 3s in the first quarter and had 10 at the break.

“When those two guys are making 3s, everything else just opens up,” McHone said. “We can be really good when they’re hitting 3s.”

Once the third quarter started, Agarwal drained a couple more 3s and then Pape added two more and the lead was up to 62-18.

JFK hit three straight 3s to end the quarter, but Boerne was leading 70-27 by then.

By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, McHone started moving players in and out of the game.

“It was a good learning experience for our younger guys,” he said. “We played 16 guys and that’s a lot.”

Pape didn’t even play in the fourth but finished with 28 points, Agarwal netted 16, Koen Wolff tallied 11, Sam Waters scored all 7 of his points in the fourth, while Casen Hoegemeyer completed the rare 4-point play after he was fouled on a made 3 and sank the free throw. He finished with 5 points, Houston Hendrix, Colton Hoegemeyer and Sam Holland all netted 4, while Jaxon Baize and Nic Hernandez both tallied 3 as 10 players scored for BHS.
