The Boerne Champion softball team was entered in its first tournament of the season last weekend when they played in the Hill Country Classic.
Champion earned its first two wins of the year and went 2-4 at the event in six games played. The Lady Chargers are 2-5 overall and played at Harlandale Tuesday. They are entered in the NEISD tourney this weekend.
RESULTS
The Lady Chargers lost a competitive game to Fredericksburg on Thursday to start the tourney, 8-5. The Billies had 7 hits compared to 6 for Champion.
Fred scored 3 in the second, but the Chargers plated a single run in the bottom of the frame and then pushed in 3 more in the third to tie it up, but the Billies pulled ahead for good with 4 runs in the top of the fourth for the 8-4 lead. The Chargers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth with a homer.
Kassidy Kureska blasted the home run and hit a single, while driving in 2 runs. Finley Rice doubled, while Ava Trevino, Jaycee Bendele and Marlena Spurrier all singled.
Rice, Kureska, Dakota Salazar, Emily Young and Spurrier all scored a run.
Finley Rice threw 5 innings and gave up 7 hits and 8 runs, while walking 2 and fanning 4.
Up next, the Churchill Chargers defeated the Champion Chargers 11-0 in four innings.
Champion had 3 hits in the game, singles from Alison Kory, Marlena Spurrier and Madison Hall.
Ava Trevino threw 4 innings and only yielded 3 earned runs, 5 base on balls and fanned 3.
On Friday, the Chargers dropped another competitive game after they fell to Johnson City, 10-8. A 10-run inning by JC was the difference in the contest.
Champion finished with 6 hits and scored 6 of its runs in the same inning that Johnson City plated its 10 runs for a long inning.
Kassidy Kureska and Riley Murrish finished with 2 hits each, while Ava Trevino and Lilly Ritchie both singled in the game. Eight different players scored one run apiece for the Chargers.
Ava Trevino and Miley Parker both threw in the game, with Trevino going 3 innings and Parker 1 frame.
Later on Friday, Champion picked up its first win of the year after they defeated Early in a low-scoring game, 4-2.
Early had the early lead and was up 2-0 in the first frame but the Chargers scored the final 4 runs of the contest to get the victory.
Champion finished with 7 hits and didn’t commit an error.
Kassidy Kureska homered for the second time at the tourney and also hit a single, while driving in 3 runs.
Finley Rice doubled and singled and scored twice, while picking up an RBI, Madison Coker, Emily Young and Marlena Spurrier all singled, with Spurrier scoring a run.
Rice went all 5 innings in the circle and picked up the win after giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, striking out 8 and walking just 1.
On Saturday, Champion’s Kendall County neighbor from up the road, Comfort defeated the Chargers in their game.
The Deer went up 1-0 but the Chargers tied it in the fourth, however Comfort plated 3 runs in the bottom of the fourth on its way to a 4-1 win.
The Chargers only had one hit in the game, an RBI triple from Emily Young that scored Riley Murrish after Murrish was walked.
Finley Rice tossed 4 innings and yielded 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks while fanning 6.
In its last game of the tourney on Saturday, the Chargers picked up its second win, 7-5 over Cameron Yoe in a tight game where each team recorded 5 hits.
The Chargers were down 5-0 in the top of the first but scored 2 in the second and then pulled ahead with 5 runs in the third.
Riley Murrish hit 2 doubles, pushed in 3 runs and scored twice and Emily Young doubled and singled and collected 2 RBI.
Madison Coker walked 3 times and scored 2 runs, while Lilly Ritchie, Marlena Spurrier and Dakota Salazar all scored once.
Ava Trevino was the winning pitcher and scattered 5 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks and fanned 4.
