Boerne Champion was at home Tuesday to host Floresville in its 2023 softball opener at Charger Field and the Lady Tigers scored in 5 of the 7 innings on its way to an 8-1 victory.

Champion starts the year at 0-1 and is entered in the NEISD Tournament this weekend.

Floresville scored a run in the first and the Chargers matched it but that would be Champion’s only run of the game, while the Tigers kept on scoring.

Floresville added single runs in the second and third innings for the 3-1 lead and then plated 2 more runs in the fourth for the 5-1 advantage.

After neither team scored in the fifth, Floresville blew it open with 3 runs in the sixth for the 8-1 lead, which is where it stayed.

Champion scored its run in the first with a two-out rally. Emily Young singled and moved to second on a Kassidy Kureska single. Ava Trevino then lined a single to center field to bring in Young and move Kureska to third, but that’s where the rally ended after the Tigers changed pitchers and recorded the next out to get out of the jam.

The Chargers finished with 6 hits in the game with 2 singles from Young, who also scored a run, while Marlena Spurrier had 2 singles. Kureska and Trevino both singled and Trevino drove in a run.

Trevino went 4.1 innings on the bump and gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, fanned 3 and walked 2, while Dakota Salazar also pitched 2.2 frames and yielded 5 hits, 4 runs, struck out 3 and walked 1.
