Both the Champion varsity soccer teams were in action Tuesday against Smithson Valley with the boys team on the road and the girls hosting at Charger Field.
It was a tough outing for the Champion teams as they fell to the Rangers by one goal in each match.
The Chargers were back at it Friday with the boys at home against Seguin and the Champion girls visiting the Lady Matadors to close out the first round of district.
Girls
Champion put up quite a fight against the No. 1 ranked Rangers but came up short, 4-3. The Chargers are 4-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in 26-5A.
Most of the scoring on Tuesday took place in the second half but the Rangers did find the back of the net once in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
SV added two more goals early in the second half and went up 3-0 but the Chargers tried to rally.
Mack Arendall put Champion on the board with the assist from Emma Mae Dixon to make it 3-1. Arendall added another goal on the Addison Huber assist and it was 3-2 just 16 minutes into the half.
The Rangers added to its lead with 12 minutes remaining to make it 4-2, however Huber converted a penalty kick with 7 minutes left to cut the lead to 4-3 but that’s as close as the Chargers came.
Boys
The Rangers recorded the 1-0 win over the Chargers on the Jax Adkins goal.
It’s Champion’s first setback of the season and leaves them at 7-1-2 overall and 4-1-1 in 26-5A.
It’s not only Champion’s first loss but also the first time this season they were kept off the scoreboard.
