Geneva hoops teams compete at district tournament

Both the Geneva School of Boerne boys and girls basketball teams wrapped up play in their district tournaments last week.

Both qualified for the playoffs that start this week.

Girls

The Geneva girls beat Corpus Christi Incarnate Word for this year’s district title, 52-29.

The Lady Eagles have won three consecutive district titles with a record of 39-0 during that stretch.

Geneva took control from the start and was leading 20-2 after one period. Incarnate Word played better in the second and matched the Eagles with 13 points to give Geneva a 33-15 halftime lead.

Things were pretty even in the second half as well.

After falling behind by 18 in the opening quarter, IWA scored 27 over the final three periods, while the Eagles tallied 32, so it was only 5 points difference between the teams after the first period.

Kyra Petty led the Eagles with 14 points, Maegan Riebel added 13 and Morgan Howard netted 10, Brynn Riebel tallied 8, while Suzie Nilsson, Bethany Deluna and Grace Detterick all chipped in with 2.

Petty grabbed 9 rebounds, while Maegan Riebel had 6 assists and 7 steals.

Boys

The Geneva boys edged Corpus Christi Incarnate Word in a close one, 43-42, to secure third place in the district.

The Eagles went 2-1 in the tournament and lost to Holy Cross, while beating Hill Country Christian and C.C. Incarnate Word.
