A high school basketball game is 32 minutes long and Friday’s district contest between the Boerne Champion and Wagner boys wasn’t decided until the teams had played 31:59 of that 32-minutes.
Just when it looked like the Chargers were going to top the T-Birds, Trevaun Clark tapped the rebound on a missed 3-pointer to himself and then floated in the game-winning shot at the buzzer to give the Thunderbirds the 52-51 victory.
It was really more like a tenth of a second left on the clock when the shot went in. There was a discussion amongst the officials as to whether the shot was good and they ruled that it was. Replays confirmed that it was good.
Entering Friday’s contest, the Chargers were still fighting for the district championship but will now enter the playoffs as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed after the loss to Wagner.
Champion visited Veterans Memorial Tuesday and a win against the Patriots keeps them in second place but a loss on Tuesday and a Wagner win would drop the Chargers to third.
The Chargers are 28-4 overall and 10-3 in district. Wagner is 9-4 in league play but has swept the Chargers, so if Champion lost Tuesday and Wagner won, they would both be 10-4 in district, giving the tiebreaker to the Thunderbirds because of the sweep.
During Friday’s game, Champion was down 43-30 with 7 minutes left but began an admirable comeback – that came up just short – and they did a lot of it at the line.
Champion’s first 13 points of the period came at the free-throw line as part of a 13-5 run.
After Quinn Grable went 1 for 2 at the stripe, the Wagner lead was down to five at 46-41 with 2:23 on the clock.
Braden Baum, who had already scored 7 points in the quarter at that point, took over down the stretch and led the charge. The senior scored the final 10 Champion points as part of a 10-4 run and actually gave the Chargers the lead at 51-50 after a bucket and a free throw with 22 seconds left.
After a timeout, Wagner worked for the last shot and with 3 seconds left, launched a corner 3 that missed. Clark tipped the ball to himself, gained control and let it go before the buzzer sounded for the win.
Champion played a great fourth quarter, except for the last second and outscored the T-Birds 23-11 in the final stanza.
Baum finished with 21 points and scored 17 of those in the fourth, Charlie Georgelos added 14 points, Dakarai Hodge had 12 and Quinn Grable finished with 4.
