The Boerne Champion boys basketball team continues to jockey for position in District 26-5A as the season heads down the stretch run.
Champion helped its cause with two wins last week after they defeated Pieper at home on Thursday and visited Smithson Valley and picked up a good road win on Friday.
The Chargers are 27-3 overall and 9-2 in district. They are second behind Veterans Memorial, a team that is 10-1 and beat the Chargers in the first round. The two play in the last game of the regular season on Feb. 14. Until then, the Chargers tangled with Seguin on Tuesday and face Wagner on Friday.
Vs. Pieper
Champion defeated Pieper, 72- 43, and received a strong performance from Braden Baum who finished with 36 points.
The Chargers were up 18-8 after one and then outscored Pieper in the second, 20-16, for the 38-24 halftime lead.
Pieper dropped in 14 in the third, but the Chargers still bested them, 16-14, to open up a 54-38 advantage.
Champion closed it out by taking the fourth quarter, 18-5.
Besides Baum’s 36, Dakarai Hodge added 9, Jackson Marshall scored 7, Quinn Grable netted 6, Justin Hill added 5, while Charlie Georgelos, Mason Wyatt and Baeden Burdick all chipped in with 3 points.
Vs. Smithson Valley
The Chargers defeated the Rangers, 67- 59. Champion jumped out to a fast start at 26-12 at the end of one quarter and that was the difference in the game.
Both teams tallied 11 in the second and 17 in the third to give the Chargers a 54-40 lead as the game went into the final stanza.
Smithson Valley made a push in the fourth quarter and outscored Champion by six points, 19-13, but the Chargers still won by 8 points.
